The Breath of Life

I went for a walk today and was blessed with gentle, warm breezes at the same time these words from a Newsboys song were playing in ears.

Breathe on me, breathe, oh, Breath of Life

Breathe on me til my heart is new

Oh, Lord, Oh, Lord, til my heart is new

-Newsboys, "Father, Blessed Father"

God is associated several times with breath and wind in the Bible. I love to think of breezes and wind as God's Holy Spirit brushing over me, breathing life into me.

The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.

-Job 33:4

Breath of Life

Isn't it interesting to think that God made us in a garden? We were created and plopped directly into a beautiful garden outside. Sort of makes you think that's where God intended us to spend a good chunk of our time, right?

Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.

-Genesis 2:7

It's sometimes not easy or natural for us to spend regular time outside in our modern world, but our bodies, minds, and spirit need time outside to reset and refresh. We need the oxygen from the clean, fresh air; vitamin D from the sunlight; and the physical activity that comes with being outside.

There are many benefits associated with being outdoors and, specifically, being in the sun. Here are just a few:

  • Reduced risk of Type 2 diabetes
  • Reduced cancer risk
  • Strong bones for better bone health
  • Better eye health
  • Boosts immunity
  • Improved metabolism; fights obesity
  • Lowered blood pressure
  • Reduced stroke risk
  • Better sleep
  • You just feel better

It's great to exercise inside if that's what works best for you, but remember to also spend frequent and regular time outside for your physical and mental health.

Get outside!

Laurie, I love this reminder! I just read it to my whole family as we are on our way to watch the Blue Angels. It is a lot of effort to get everyone out the door (even as teenagers!), but I know the family time as well as time out in God’s beautiful creation will be good for all of us. Keep up the wonderful work here, Laurie!
