Blueberry Dark Chocolate Chunk Smoothie

This simple smoothie is dark and rich, but not too sweet. It is a healthy powerhouse of nutrition.

It’s a great way to start out your morning especially if you are cutting back on sugar and aren’t quite in the mood for greens.

Did you know that women who regularly consume blueberries are purported to maintain their cognitive functions up to 2.5 years longer than those who don’t? And that study ONLY looked at blueberries, not other lifestyle measures such as an otherwise healthy diet, exercise, stress level, sleep . . . What if every one of your meals was packed with antioxidant-rich, nutrient-dense foods like this?? Just a thought.

If you really want to blow this out of the park, add some greens! Spinach is very mild in taste, and you won’t even notice a few leaves.

If you don’t like the taste of hemp seeds you can leave them out or just top the smoothie with them. Some people find them bitter.  I don’t always like to blend them, but I don’t really notice them if they are topping something. HOWEVER –  Try to incorporate hemp seeds in your diet if possible as they are a great source of complete protein, essential fats (Omega 3, 6, and 9) and fiber.

And do we really need a reason to eat chocolate? No, we don’t. Nonetheless, it is possible to find studies to show that chocolate has benefits such as:

  • Lowering cholesterol levels
  • Preventing cognitive decline
  • Reducing the risk of cardiovascular problems

Blueberry Dark Chocolate Chunk Smoothie

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup blueberries
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 2 cups almond milk
  • 2 tablespoons almond butter
  • 1 tablespoon hemp seeds
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • honey or other sweetener to taste (only if needed)
  • dark chocolate chunks or chips

Directions:

Blend everything except the dark chocolate chunks. Top with the chocolate chunks and enjoy 🙂
